ENVIRONMENTAL MITIGATION

Brookby Quarry proposes to extract 211 million tonnes of rock from the Stage 1, 2 and 3 over the next 84 years based on current demand.  This will result in the staged removal of native vegetation, wildlife habitat, and permanent watercourses.  As a condition of our resource consents our Ecological Management Plan has the following objectives:

  • To safeguard a long-term net environmental gain on the site, being that native forest habitat and freshwater habitat for native fauna removed at the site, is of a greater quantity, and is of the same or a higher quality than the habitat to be removed as a result of staged expansion.

  • To warrant the early establishment of environmental and ecological mitigation measures on the site particularly revegetation areas to allow these areas time to establish as viable habitats early in the expansion stages.

  •  To protect existing ecological resources which are to be retained from any significant adverse effects associated with the staged expansion.

  • To ensure the environmental and ecological mitigation measures are maintained and monitored, and suitably protected to ensure these measures are effective mitigation throughout the life of the consents.

  • Ultimately like-for-like biodiversity gains in those values lost are projected to be realised at 30 years from the commencement of stage 3. These gains, which will continue to develop and increase as forest matures and will be permanent.

Summary of environmental restoration to date:

  • As built planting, area = 29.36 ha in total.

  • Stream rehabilitation, area = 4.56 ha in total.

  • As built Western cleanfill stream offset and wetland compensation, area = 4.75 ha.

  • Native forest geckos have been relocated to wetland areas.  This relocation has been in progress for the last 10 years.

  • Brookby Quarry has conducted extensive bat surveys over many years with no evidence of bat presence.

  • All native fish species comprising of fin eel, banded kokopu and koura were removed and relocated.

Summary of upcoming environmental mitigation:

  • 112 ha of upcoming offset planting.

  • 249 ha of native forest enhancement.

  • Stream offset riparian planting and enhancement of 1246m of existing streams.

  • Continued monitoring and relocation of native forest geckos.
